 Fun and easy things kids can do outside of Arlington and nearby places

Take a walk in the woods (Potomac) look for parks, Lucy Woods, Gulf Branch, or other places in the woods) and find traces of the season. For example, in the spring you would find buds, new plant and animal symbols such as tracks, signs, feathers, scaly under the grass, wilted plants, scratches in the bark of trees. 

Check out audio tapes from the library to help you learn the names and calls of native birds. Learn them and then identify them, observe them and go to the door to mimic their movements in the brush, on the ground or between the trees. How do different birds move?

Leave your front entryway. What number of shades of green, yellow and blue would you be able to see? 


Make wind turbines (e.g., a stick, bamboo) and 2 shells from the material you find on the ground.

To log in, look around your school, yard, or a local park and hover over to find out what's underneath (remember when you're done)

Leave the Rock on a Pool - Try the pond on the bike path that runs beneath it, overpass Anne Lincoln Street, or head down the Potomac River to the Potomac Overlock, Gulf Branch, or Theodore Roosevelt Island and skip the rocks.

Seal a large leaf in storm water (Magnolia leaves work great!) When it flows down the street - Race! Or launch leaf boats in any of the many series Arlington (ie, Long Branch, Potomac Overlock, Air Run).
Find Fossils in Most Rivers Arlington - Hint: They're sunk in the rocks!
Also check out the Rock Climbers along the Cat-Goat Trail, the two co-channels and the climbers scaling the rocks across the river.
Look for deer in the woods. Potomac looks. Park - Check out their salt licks near Native American Gardens.
Dig for insects anywhere - as the soil warms, they get closer to the surface! Don't try to handle them too much - they prefer their humid and dark environment.
In the spring, walk around the flowers and plants to see if you can find insects. For small eggs and larvae, check under their leaves. Do you remember your magnifying glass?
Find a favorite hiding place - in a tree, especially large Japanese maple, apple trees, crepe myrtles, and others with low hanging branches. There are some in the fit. In Smith Park and Clay Park. The National Cathedral Garden has special hiding places, but be careful not to tread on the plants.
Crack open the rocks with a hammer and wear goggles to protect your eyes!
Fly a kite at the Mall, Eve Jama Memorial, or Kenmore Middle School Farm.
Grab some friends and play baseball, softball, basketball, football, kickball pickup game, or grab the flag at many of our schools and public playgrounds - volleyball can be played from Central Library Park Is.
Walking in the rain with or without an umbrella.
